At Club WHY, hockey is about more than skating drills or scoring goals. It’s about belonging, confidence, and community. Since launching our Hockey Basics programs, we’ve welcomed women of all ages and skill levels onto the ice — and their experiences say it best.
🏒 “I laced up hockey skates for the very first time.”
“In June 2024, I did something I'd never thought I'd do — I laced up a pair of hockey skates for the very first time. I felt completely out of my element and was pretty convinced the experience would be short-lived. But that changed the second I stepped out on the ice. Learning to play hockey and becoming part of this amazing community of women has been incredibly beneficial for both my physical and mental health. I'm so thankful I found the courage to give it a try. If this resonates with you at all, I hope you'll find the courage too. You won't regret it.”
⛸ “At 40, with two kids and zero experience…”
“At 40, with two kids and zero experience, I decided to try hockey — and I'm so glad I did. The first time I stepped on the ice, I was terrified — and thrilled. I could barely stand upright, let alone chase a puck. But everyone was so encouraging, and I quickly realized that no one cared how good I was, they just cared that I showed up. I found support, laughs, and a new kind of confidence I didn't know I needed. If you've ever thought you were too old, too busy, or too unsure to try something new — don't listen to that voice. Lace up. Get out there. You just might surprise yourself and fall in love with it like I did.”
🥅 “I haven’t looked back since.”
“At first I was approached about joining this ‘Hockey Basics’ program and it was a hard ‘No’. I was asked again, and I hesitantly said yes. I haven't looked back since. I have come to love the game, the exercise, the sportsmanship and the friendships that I have made on the way. Hockey has been an eye opener in more than one way and I am so glad that this opportunity presented itself when it did. I encourage anyone who is even thinking of joining, do it!”
💙 Why This Matters
For new players: these stories prove you don’t need hockey experience — you just need the courage to give it a try. The game, the support, and the friendships will follow.
For the community: these voices highlight how Club WHY is doing more than teaching hockey skills. We’re building confidence, connection, and opportunities for women in Yarmouth County — and creating a legacy that will last for generations.
